The International Film Festival “Etiuda&Anima”, organized in Kraków since 1994, is the oldest film festival in Poland which juxtaposes the achievements of students of film and art schools from all over the world, as well as works of fine-art animation films creators: professionals, students, as well as independent producers.

The main events of every annual festival are the two contests which give the festival its name, and during which the following prizes are awarded: in the student competition, comprising feature and documentary etudes, the Golden, Silver and Bronze Dinosaurs, as well as the Special Golden Dinosaur Award for the best film school of the festival; in the anima contest, Golden, Silver and Bronze Jabberwocky, as well as the Special Golden Jabberwocky for the student creating the best animated etude of the festival. The annual Special Golden Dinosaur is also awarded to an outstanding pedagogue who is at the same time a successful, active artist.

Since the beginnings of the Festival, the main points of the programme are accompanied by a vast range of other events. They provide a chance to get acquainted with world-class animation artists and the most interesting phenomena of this sphere of art. The accompanying events provide a chance to recall the most interesting works in the history of cinema, especially animations and documentaries. They also enable to get acquainted with contemporary short films and feature animated films which don’t reach the mainstream.

The International Film Festival “Etiuda&Anima” has been for years one of the most ambitious film festivals in Poland, and one that has been an inspiration for the organizers of other events of this kind throughout the country.

Krakow’s All Souls Jazz Festival is the oldest jazz festival in Europe, founded in 1954 as part of an underground jam session while jazz, being music of freedom was forbidden to perform publicly in Poland. For musicians, representing intellectual’s class, playing jazz was an escape from grey and sad then Poland under Communism regime. All of them knew each other but the only day they could get off work was All Souls Day – that’s how it started. The festival attracted both Polish and foreign jazzmen as well as jazz fans every year in early November for over half century. The music has been changing in keeping with current trends, also venues and performers, but some features remain constant.

This year’s festival takes place from 30 October to 9 November

All Saints’ Day, Also known as Allhallows or Hallowmas is a festival which has been celebrated in Poland and the rest of the Catholic world for many centuries. All Saints Day is a national holiday, and a day when people all over Poland visit the graves of loved ones and to place candles and flowers on graves. Candles are placed on the graves to help souls finding their way through the darkness. The day after All Saints Day, All Souls Day is set aside to pray for the souls who have yet to find their way to Heaven. The view of milions of candles in transparent, coloured vases and the atmosphere that laid you into a parallel world is a thing that you can not miss. Step through the Gothic gateway of Rakowicki Cemetery to see probably the most incredible lagoon of glowing colours of All Saint’s Day in Cracow.

From the 5^th of April – Palm Sunday on the Main Market Square all tourist can visit brand new Easter Market. Krakow Easter Market is very similar to the Christmas market with lots of little trinkets, yummy food and friendly people. You can spend whole day wandering around, buying little treats and enjoying the sights and sounds. Try tasty dinner at the market – sausages and rolls with mushrooms and of course the best krakowian mullet wine J If you will be there don’t forget to look at painted eggs – “Pisanki”, Polish palms, handmade baskets, as well as some less traditional stuff for children. Pick up souvenirs like easter pralines or yummy chocolate. It is also a great place to soak up the atmosphere and learn more about Polish Easter traditions and customs. The market will be open daily, from 5^th of April till 19^th of April.

Easter in Krakow is magical time preceded with Palm Sunday (5th April 2009) On this day people bring the branches made of pusssy willow or wild flowers to the church for blessing. You can buy Easter palms near every church in Krakow and also on the Main Market Square . On Saturday before Easter Sunday polish people take to the churches decorated baskets containing a sampling of traditional food to be blessed. A typical basket includes eggs, salt, cake, ham or sausage and bread, but there will also be painted eggs and always a small model of a lamb. The decorated eggs in the baskets called “pisanki” is another classic feature of the Polish Easter. Children and adults decorate eggs with lots of colour and flowers and put on the Polish Easter Table as an essential part of it. The most famous Mass on the Saturday take place in front of the Mariacki Church at 1:00 pm. Easter Sunday is in Krakow day of family meetings. This day begins with a visit to the church in the morning. When family has returned home from Mass does the Easter breakfast begin. There is tradition to share blessed eggs with the members of the family and wish each other good health and happiness. Easter Monday is the one day in the year in Krakow when the consumption of water shoots up. There is in Krakow and whole Poland delightful tradition of Śmigus Dyngus when the guys are sprinkling girls with the water or perfumes. But there is also the other version of Smigus Dyngus when the whole buckets of water come into play. On Easter Monday numerous stalls open in the Salvator district, selling mainly sweets and toys. There is a chance to soak in polish traditions called Emaus, alive for last 7 centuries. But watch out, everyone can be wet !!

Six trapdoors, a few stage wings, a computer-controlled acoustic ceiling, and a moveable orchestra pit… Krakow now has a great new opera house and theatre complex than ranks with the best in Europe.

After many years of strenuous efforts, Krakow can at last start the final countdown. The long-awaited opening of the Krakow Opera, scheduled for the 13th of December, promises to be a cause for great celebration. Krakow composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s “The Devils of Loudon”, directed by Laco Adamik, will be inaugurating the new stage at 48 Lubicz Street. This is one opera guaranteed to test the capabilities of modern opera to the utmost. The modernistic building, already a fixture on the cityscape of Krakow, was designed by Krakow architect Romuald Loegler and his associates Piotr Urbanowicz and Grzegorz Dresler. Construction began in 2004. The claret-coloured walls of the opera house, the largest structure of the complex, with the Great Stage inside, are imposing to say the least. The grey building with its semicircular roof is uncannily reminiscent of the old Krakow Operetta, thereby keeping alive the memories of local opera lovers.

Krakow is getting ready to say goodbye to 2008 with its annual New Year’s Eve party on Rynek Glowny. The historical Old Town around Rynek Glowny is the focus of the celebrations and the streets are filled with people from all over the World. Music keeps everyone entertained and the city’s pretty Grand Square becomes a dance floor. Leona Lewis, Kate Ryan, Kasia Kowalska, Tatiana Okupnik, Natalia Kukulska – beautiful female singers all in one place on a winter evening… Such a treat is only possible in the heart of Krakow. Everybody knows that in Krakow, New Years Eve is a big deal. Right before midnight, the countdown begins, and at the sound of bells from St Mary’s Cathedral a procession of fireworks light up the sky. The city fireworks display over Old Town can be viewed from nearly every vantage point in the city centre. Be warned, it can get a bit nippy so a warm coat is advised!

Traditional Christmas market is one of the biggest attractions in Krakow before Christmas. It takes place on the Main Market Square. You’ll find plenty of smaller booths and stands around the Main Market Square selling some great things like delicious mulled wine (Grzaniec Galicyjski), sausages and the distinctive fried oscypek cheese. Some of the very best handcraft traders are coming to Krakow to create this traditional Christmas Market. There are also carol singers, choirs and musicians there to enetertain you in the main square. The city of Krakow is a magical place at Christmas whether you want to buy Christmas gifts or just enjoy the traditional festive atmosphere. For several weeks, this really will be shopping with a difference and a chance to sample some traditional festive goodies! All this will make the market a great place to pass the time and come together to enjoy a special atmosphere. Everybody will be enchanted by its joyful and festive spirit.

Audio Art is an experimental and postmodernist art of the close of XX century and the beginning of the XXI century. This festival is an integration of sound and visual art. Presentation appears in form of the concert, performance and installation and creates new concept of sound source.. Audio Art is a “one person art”: composer, designer and performer unify the whole process of art creation. Artists from all over the world use low and high technology. The 1^st and 2^nd of November are probably one of the most important days of the year for most Poles. All Saints’ Day – the days when you remember those who’ve already gone. During those days the cemeteries become a spectacular site with thousands of candles. All Saint’s Day in Poland is different than in the rest of Europe, graves are decorated with small lanterns in addition to flowers. These lanterns are made with a colored glass containing a candle, covered with a perforated metal cover to prevent wind from extinguishing it.

Cemetery become then, during two days, melancholy places to visit with one’s family. In the evening the light of thousands of candles makes the sky red, thousands of flowers make the grey autumnal evening more colorful. All together it look really beautiful, cemetery become a different world….
